Today, back in 1945 it also marked the official start of the downfall of Hitler, and the start of "The Battle of Berlin" when the Soviets began the last offensive to reach Hitler's Bunker and Germany's Reichstag.
On the intervening nights of April 16th & April 17th Soviet forces managed to get an operational advantage in the city of Berlin.
