If Tóibín is shocked that McEntee granted an amnesty to 1,000 rejected asylum seekers with deportation orders in 2022, why didn't he say anything at the time when she announced that's what her amnesty scheme for illegals intended to facilitate? Why only bring it up ahead of an election? You know why.

Some of the detail in the Mail's report is incorrect: There were two tracks in McEntee's amnesty scheme: One for illegals and another for asylum seekers. While illegals had to be in the country for four years+ to apply, asylum seekers only had to be in direct provision for two years+.

3,000 so-called asylum seekers were successful in applying for the scheme along with 5,000 illegals.

So-called expert on asylum, Catherine Day, had advised providing an amnesty to asylum seekers to clear out the system out ahead of the government's adoption of the recommendations in her White Paper. Sinn Féin also lobbied for McEntee to extend her amnesty to include asylum seekers.
