An illicit 1910 photograph taken secretly inside Court Number One, The Old Bailey by a journalist in the press gallery. The photograph is of the accused Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen on trial for the murder of his wife Cora Crippen.
.
Just out of shot, to the left, are the steps down to the cells beneath the courts. There is a narrow, stone-flagged, white-tiled passageway known as Deadman’s Walk (Also known as Birdcage Walk) that leads to the cells which are quite antiquated. Prisoners do not usually know that when they walk over those flagstones they are walking over the unmarked graves of prisoners executed at Newgate Prison.
