Seismic activity occurred at 00:24 local time.
The epicenter was located at a depth of 60 km, less than 10 km from the city of Machala, the capital of the province of El Oro, on the border with Peru.
Tremors were felt in other nearby Ecuadorian cities such as Guayaquil.
Frightened residents ran out into the street.
It is reported that the earthquake does not meet the conditions for a tsunami.
Authorities report no property damage or casualties from the quake.
