Something that’s unique to Gen-X and millennials is they mistake being “clever” for being funny. It doesn’t ever have to evoke genuine laugher, they want something to which they can respond “oh…I see what you did there, how deft.” And then they laugh through their noses. It’s this kind of bourgeois aspirational humor that defines those generations: witty puns, references to ‘80s films, quippy, snarky in-group jokes that show they spent far too much money on four year degrees. Boomers and zoomers, on the other hand, just like something that’ll make them laugh. What makes them laugh is entirely different—but it’s not to be confused with the insufferable mid generations’ penchant for pseudo e-wit.
