Traditionally May Day was the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice! In ancient times, this was one of the Celtic cross-quarter days, which marked the midway points between the (four) solstices and equinoxes of the year.
As with many early holidays, May Day was rooted in agriculture. Springtime festivities filled with song and dance celebrated the sown fields starting to sprout. Cattle were driven to pasture, special bonfires were lit, and doors of houses as well as livestock were decorated with yellow May flowers. In the Middle Ages, the Gaelic people celebrated the festival of Beltane. Beltane means “Day of Fire.” People created large bonfires and danced at night to celebrate.
May Day has a long history and tradition in England, children would dance around the maypole, holding onto colorful ribbons. People would ”bring in the May” by gathering wildflowers and green branches, weaving floral hoops and hair garlands, and crowning a May king and queen.

Remember to appreciate your surroundings 🐝
It's been a long cold winter here on the Isle of Skye. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to summer this year, the feeling of that lovely warmth on my face is a welcoming thought, seeing flowers in full bloom and wildlife busy doing what it does best.
I'm hoping that the new British wildflower seeds that have been sent out with the recent orders, will also help the bees and insects too, and I would be so grateful if you are able to send pictures of these once they are in bloom and if you catch a bee enjoying the pollen that would be wonderful. You can email them to me [email protected]
Also, in the spirit of positive thinking and to let the sun know that the Isle of Skye would appreciate a good show in this year I've added a 15% discount code to the website (off the whole range), which is available until Monday 8th May. Simply enter Sunshine15 in the coupon section at the checkout.
Also, the following soaps are back in stock; Clean & Pure, Joyful, Nostalgia and Skye Breeze.

Homeland Party Bulletin - The Party has been formally founded!
Tonight we are very pleased to announce the Party has been formally founded and we are now operating under our Constitution. The National Council agreed upon a draft Constitution over the weekend and this has been approved by the membership.
We have sent an application off to the Electoral Commission, who are responsible for registering parties so they can stand candidates under a party name at an election; they do not create or approve parties. We expect to hear back from them after June.
We would like to thank everyone who helped make this happen and give a special thanks to you all for putting your faith in us to see it through.

The evolution of a wildflower meadow. Here is what you can expect from the seeds that are gifted with each order.
Year 1
Most meadow mixes contain a mix of annual and perennial wildflower species. The annuals (plants that complete their lifecycle in one growing season) will grow up in the first year after sowing and bloom. Depending on your seed mix, expect to see cornfield annuals such as bright red field poppies and sky-blue cornflowers, as well as white corn chamomiles and mauve corncockles. These annual species will dieback with the first frosts at the end of a long flowering season.

Year 2
Now the perennials that were putting down strong roots and growing stalks and leaves last year are starting to flower. But even in year 2, it’s only the fastest growing perennial species which will bloom. Expect to see an abundance of white ox eye daisies, a vigorous grower and often the species which dominates a meadow in its second year. You might be lucky enough to see some splashes of colour from last year’s annuals that have self-seeded.

Year 4 (and onwards!)
Now your meadow is in full swing with a diverse mix of perennial species in flower from May through to September. With the correct management (mowing in late summer / early autumn every year and removing the clippings) you can expect your meadow to get more and more species-rich with every passing year.
Now you can sit back and enjoy long summers full of abundant and beautiful wildflowers; your species-rich meadow bustling with wildlife... it just took a little patience.
