There were several dozen Canadian geese who lived at the prison I was in. So many inmates were terrified of them and almost everyone hated that they squawked outside our cells all night every night. I absolutely loved them. Their loud squawking transformed the harsh atmosphere and brought me peace.
My second cell mate and I didn't get along well at all. The strain was rough on both of us. We were completely different in all the important ways. But we both adored the geese. We bonded over that. Our love for the geese helped us see the good in each other. I don't think we would have parted as friends without them.
She and I were released the same day and have no contact. I smile imagining her missing our prison geese, too. :)

When I was young and living in my first apartment, I had a goldfish and no TV. I'd come home from work and put my hand in my fish's big bowl and he'd swim over and rest his body in my hand for several minutes. This fish reminds me of him and makes me smile.

Rape, retaliation, mold and asbestos. The inmates stood up, the judge appointed a Special Master, then the Bureau of Prisons ordered the prison to be abruptly closed.

In her first public statement since being appointed on the day of an FBI raid at the soon-to-close federal women's prison in Dublin, Warden Nancy T. McKinney told a judge that she had no authority to delay the closure of FCI Dublin.
This is the prison I was in for J6 misdemeanors.
It was so bad when the guards screamed at us. A lot of the women have PTSD from domestic violence. It was a massive trigger and the guards knew it.
No one deserves to be treated like this, regardless their crimes.

FCI Dublin closure: Women leave prison despite lawyer's attempt to halt transfers
Lawyers representing a class of women incarcerated at the soon-to-close FCI Dublin prison filed an emergency temporary restraining order Friday, urging a judge to temporarily block the transfer of anyone who is left at the troubled women's prison.
