Today in Welsh history… 20th of July 1962, the world's first passenger and mail hovercraft service began between Rhyl and Moreton, Wirral.

The previous year there had been discussions on where to operate the hovercraft.  Moreton and Rhyl were eventually decided upon because of their flat beaches. The hovercraft was scheduled to do 12 trips a day. This they achieved on 6 days only, on 4 other days they reached 10 trips.  In total it only ran on 19 days out of 54. On the 36 days it did not run, the reasons were varied. The principal ones being strong winds and high seas, and continual failure of the rear lift engine. The last trip was on Friday 14th September 1962, and when only just over halfway, one of the lift engines failed, it was soon followed by a second.  Although there were 2 more days scheduled, it was not to be, and the service was permanently scrapped.

Last year one PA Wales activist decided to set aside a part of his garden to grow vegetables and provide fresh salad, fruit and veg for his family. Everything has been grown organically, with companion planting to encourage healthy growth. Judging by the pictures, it looks like it will be a bumper crop this year!

Even if you haven’t got access to a garden or an allotment, growing food can be achieved in practically any domestic situation. Try growing herbs, salads, tomatoes and veg in pots on a sunny windowsill. Start in early spring and later reap the rewards (including the taste!).
