Stefan Hockertz studied biology at the University of Hanover (diploma 1985) and was awarded his doctorate there with a dissertation on the subject of the function of the cells of the macrophage system in Leishmania donovani infection in 1988.[5] In 1999 he habilitated at the University of Hamburg in the subjects of toxicology and pharmacology with the habilitation thesis Immunotoxicology: Changes in Immunological Functions of the Organism.[6] He was a member of the Fraunhofer Working Group for Toxicology and Environmental Medicine in Hamburg.
From 1986 to 2001, he conducted research at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Hanover, and was also a member of the Fraunhofer Working Group for Toxicology and Environmental Medicine in Hamburg.[7]
From 2000 to 2001, he was a private lecturer in toxicology and pharmacology at the University of Hamburg, and from 2001 to 2004, he was Professor (C3) of Molecular Immunotoxicology. From 2000 to 2003 he worked at the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Hospital Eppendorf, of which he was director in 2004. In 2003 and 2004 he worked at the Centre for Experimental Medicine.[8]
