The Israeli Public Loses, and the Banks Profit

Inflation in Israel hasn’t subsided, so the Bank of Israel will apparently announce another interest rate hike on Monday. In April, the Consumer Price Index rose by 0.8 percentage points, which obliges the central bank to adopt a tight money policy to try to halt inflation, which is tantamount to a tax that particularly hurts the poor. Since April 2022, the Bank of Israel has raised its key lending rate nine times in a row, and it currently stands at 4.5 percent.

The heaviest price is paid by people with mortgages, who are contending with ever-increasing monthly payments. According to Bank of Israel data, the average monthly payment for someone who took out a mortgage between 2017 and 2022 has, due to the recent interest rate hikes, risen from 554 to 873 shekels ($153 to $241). And in many cases, the monthly payment exceeds 1,000 shekels. This increases pressure on households, reduces disposable income and necessitates savings on other expenditures.
