🇲🇩⚔️🟥🟩🟥 Commentary on a question posed by GIW:

The answer is no. Transnistria still remains equal to Moldova in terms of its armed forces, disposing of large stocks of Cold War era artillery shells and the equipment of the Soviet 14th Army which never left the enclave in addition to Russian instructors some with prior military experience.

Moldova by itself won't be able to conquer Transnistria, her rulers are unpopular and few of young demographic would volunteer to fight in an offensive war against a better armed foe. This is known by those in Chisinau who have adopted a policy of peaceful reintegration.

They will not carry out a military operation in Transnistria nor allow someone else to do it for them in their place (Ukraine) out of fear of antagonising the locals. They would rather slow boil the separatists by taking control over their natural gas supply which powers the industry present in the enclave, the main source of income for the region, and by getting rid of Transnistria's monopoly over Moldova's electric energy by developing more connections with the Romanian power grid which would virtually erase Tiraspol's ability to blackmail Chisinau into submission.

Moldova is ruled by a woman who behaves more like a dictator but aims to keep the illusion of liberal democracy in place for her Western friends and backers which would feel uncomfortable supporting an autocratic leader, especially after the war in Ukraine. For Maia Sandu to start a "special military operation" against Transnistria would make little sense as long as the Russians stay far away from Transnistria. Maia Sandu currently has time on her side.

🇷🇴🟨⭐️ AUR has initiated a vote of no-confidence against the Ciolacu cabinet.

The other opposition parties in the Parliament refused to support the initiative with REPER, a small, far-left progressist party choosing to start its own vote of no-confidence inviting the other opposition parties like USR, Forța Dreptei and UDMR, to support their initiative.

As AUR has a total of 40 MPs, it is nowhere near enough for the vote to be valid, with 117 signatures needed to start the procedure. The vote of no-confidence proposed by REPER can meet 117 signatures required with USR having 67 MPs, Forța Dreptei with 16, REPER with 10 and UDMR with 29. Then the vote would need to have the support of 50%+1 of the MPs but the current coalition government controls 58.56% of the seats in Parliament (other minorities except Hungarians included).

With 466 seats, REPER would need 234 votes. Even if AUR contributed they would reach 162 votes, the motion needing the support of some "traitors" from PNL + other national representatives of minorities.

UDMR has a track record of refraining from supporting no-confidence votes as they are known to be a "kingmaker" type of political party which often sets the balance by forming parliamentary majorities and governments. UDMR doesn't involve itself into these votes as to not be accused of stacking the balance in favor of someone.

🇺🇦🇷🇴 Mayor of Tatarbunar, a town in the Budjak region of the Odessa Oblast, Ukraine, stirred a wave of indignation among the Romanian minority in that region of Ukraine by writing an eulogy to the 1924 Tatarbunar Uprising, a revolt orchestrated by Bolshevik Russia with the help of local Russian, Ukrainian and Jewish communists against the Romanian state.

The revolt itself was just one uprising out of four other ones which were supposed to happen simultaneously in Transylvania, Bucovina and Dobrudja. The other uprisings never materialised due to lack of interests on behalf of the ethnic minorities which the Soviets relied upon and due to the swiftness of the Romanian authorities in dealing with them.

The uprising itself aimed to "end Romanian occupation" and establish a "Moldavian Soviet Republic". The USSR never recognised the act of union with Romania voted by the Sfatul Țării (literally ”Council of the Country”) on March 27th 1918 marking the end of the short-lived Moldavian Democratic Republic, and sought to reestablish its control over the region which had a diverse population especially in its southern and northern parts which were predominantly inhabited, in the north, by Ukrainians and the south where no ethnic group had a clear majority, being split between, Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians, Gagauzians and other Turkic peoples, Bulgarians, Jews and Germans. They used this fact to propagate a narrative of "colonization" by the Kingdom of Romania and stir revolutionary feelings which culminated in the uprising which, in the end, failed, due to Moscow refusing to directly implicate itself in the affair.

The mayor, Andriy Glushchenko, wrote a Facebook post celebrating this event as a moment showcasing "the brave actions of our compatriots" and "a fight for freedom and justice". Glushchenko also referred to the 1940 annexation of Bessarabia as "the moment of liberation".

Anatol Popescu, the president of National Cultural Association "Basarabia" from the region of Budjak, demanded that Glushchenko withdraw his statement and issue an apology for propagating Russian propaganda.

🇷🇴🇺🇦 A civic association based in Cernăuți/Chernivtsi, called Consiliul Național al Românilor din Ucraina, (National Council of Romanians in Ukraine, CNRU) wrote a letter to the Romanian ambassador in Ukraine, Corneliu Ionescu, asking for the intervention of the Romanian government into stopping the excessive mobilization of ethnic Romanians into the AFU.

Previously another the ”Vatra” association representing the ”Moldovan” minority in Ukraine did the same but from the Moldovan government.

The CNRU warns that if this continues, it will lead to a souring of Romanian-Ukrainian relations and anti-Ukrainian sentiment inside the Romanian community in Ukraine.

🇲🇩🟨🇲🇩🟥 The PAS parliamentary majority voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of the Renaissance MP, Alexandr Nesterovschi.

Nesterovschi is accused of attempted bribery after being caught trying to bribe the socialist mayor of Ocnița to leave PSRM and join Renaissance.

In the case of a member of parliament, his immunity protects him from being detained and his properties to be searched. For the investigation to proceed, the immunity has to be lifted and can only be done so with the absolute majority (50%+1) of the MPs.

🇷🇴🇮🇱📰🇮🇱 Haaretz | Romania's FM Declined to Meet Israeli Counterpart After Israel Legitimized Romanian Far-right Party

While a Romanian news site says the invitation was rejected due to Cohen's orders to Israel's ambassador to Romania to meet with the far-right AUR party last month, a government source claims it's due to the minister's schedule during her visit in New York.

Romania's Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu declined to meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen during the UN General Assembly in New York, according to a report by a leading media organization in the country.

Additionally, while the Romanian government source said the Israeli foreign minister had proposed the meeting with Cohen during the UN General Assembly, Israel denied it.

Although she refused to meet with Cohen, Odobescu held a long meeting on Tuesday with the leaders of Jewish organizations in New York, at which she also mentioned Israel’s recognition of the AUR party.

A source told Haaretz that the Romanian minister spoke about the history of the party’s leaders, which includes Holocaust denial, antisemitic comments, and the spreading of conspiracy theories. In recent years, the party, which is part of the opposition, went so far as to vote against a resolution in the Romanian Parliament condemning anti-Semitism, and praised fascist and anti-Semitic leaders in Romanian history and during World War II.

Romania is currently considered one of the friendliest countries toward Israel in the European Union.

The ties with the far-right in Romania are part of a larger move led by Eli Cohen, with the support of right-wing leaders in Israel, to grow closer with the extreme right throughout Europe. One of the people leading this effort is the head of the Shomron Regional Council in the West Bank, Yossi Dagan, who also participated in the meeting with the Romanian party alongside Ambassador Ezer. Similar ties are being fostered with the far-right party in Sweden, and ties with the German AfD are also being considered.

🇷🇴🟨⭐️📝🇷🇴 AUR leader, George Simion, addressed a demand to the ministry of foreign affairs, for explanations regarding a Haaretz article which claimed that the Romanian FM, Luminița Odobescu, refused to meet with her Israeli counterpart, Eli Cohen, at the UN.

Simion demanded to know if "the claims made by Haaretz are based in facts or not". Haaretz cited liberal Romanian outlet, G4Media, which claimed that Odobescu refused to meet Cohen after news broke of him ordering Israeli ambassador in Bucharest, Reuven Azar, to meet with George Simion, a move which was denounced by many Jewish, mostly liberal, news outlets, institutions and figures which criticised Likud for the "Kosherization of antisemitism".

"If true, this incident represents a grave and unjust implication of the Romanian diplomacy into the internal politics of the country and Israeli-Romanian relations. This is a grave attack on Romania's image and interests" said Simion.

🇲🇩🟨🇲🇩🟥 PAS voted to lift the immunity of Renaissance MP, Irina Lozovan, a colleague of Alexandr Nesterovschi.

Both were detained for 72 hours. Lozovan is accused of accepting illicit funds sourced from an unnamed criminal organisation for the political party, Renaissance, a charge that was also brought to Nesterovschi besides his other charge.

General prosecutor, Ion Munteanu, who asked for the lifting of the parliamentary immunities of the two MPs said that both Lozovan and Nesterovschi tried to bribe the socialist mayor of Otaci with 2 million MDL to join Renaissance (sometimes also referred to as "Revival" in English).

Authorities caught Lozovan in the act trying to give to the mayor 30k USD in a parking lot last August. Munteanu then explained that the money was coming from runaway Jewish-Moldovan oligarch, Ilan Shor.

Ion Munteanu explained in front of the Parliament that Renaissance/Revival is "an alternative to the Shor Party". He added that the investigation is near completion and the two MPs will be in front of a judge in a matter of weeks.

So far, prosecutors have established that a group of unknown persons acting on behalf of Ilan Shor, bribed Nesterovschi to leave the Communist Socialist Bloc (BCS, formed by PSRM and PCRM) and join Renaissance/Revival. They also found out that Nesterovschi was being paid 5000 USD monthly for carrying out other attributes besides his parliamentary duties in the interest of Ilan Shor.

🇷🇴🇦🇹 Austrian medias have begun reporting that Romania is taking revenge on Austria for the negative vote regarding Schengen membership by refusing to give the credentials to a number of Austrian military personnel participating in some NATO military exercices.

Austria is not a member of NATO but is a member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program and they appear regularly to NATO exercices. In 2016 Turkey vetoed Austria’s participation at the NATO reunions after Austria vetoed Turkey’s EU negotiations. In 2018, Austria convinced the Turkish authorities to lift their previous ban and only in 2022 Vienna stated that they are able to fully take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Partnership for Peace program, which is itself now hampered by Bucharest.

🇷🇴⚖️🇷🇴🟨🌟 The Superior Magistrates Council has condemned a statement made by AUR president, George Simion, accusing the politician of attempting to intimidate prosecutors and interfere in the justice system.

Simion livestreamed himself entering the General Prosecutor’s Office and began asking the employees about the state of a number of cases under investigation which are of significant interest for the Romanian public but was met with the refusal to disclose information and Simion left empty handed. Before ending the livestream, George Simion stated: “This office is holding a bunch of cases which… which were not verified by the “guys”, which were not verified by the political parties, by those that rule us, by the foreign embassies. They are not making justice. What is the point in having prosecutors?”.
