Algeria Threatens To Cut Spain’s Gas Supply Over Morocco Dispute

Algiers has warned that if Spain forwards any of the gas it sends to the Iberian country to a third party, it will cut off its supply amidst heightened tensions with Morocco over Western Sahara’s sovereignty.

Rabat claims the territory belongs to Morocco, whereas Algeria backs independence. The disagreement led to Algiers cutting off diplomatic relations with its African neighbor last year.

Spain had received about 40% of its gas from Algeria in 2021. Madrid announced Wednesday it would supply Morrocco with gas via the GME pipeline that connects all three countries, while insisting it would not be of Algerian origin.
