In his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush closed the speech with this:
โThey embrace tyranny and death as a cause and a creed. We stand for a different choice, made long ago, on the day of our founding. We affirm it again today. We choose freedom and the dignity of every life. Steadfast in our purpose, we now press on. We have known freedomโs price. We have shown freedomโs power. And in this great conflict, my fellow Americans, we will see freedomโs victory.โ
Over the course of 20 years the United States spent more than $8 trillion invading and occupying Afghanistan and Iraq, intervening in Libya, Syria, and Yemen, and conducting counterterrorism operations in 73 other countries. The number of US troops and contractors killed during these actions exceeds 15,000, with a total loss of life for civilians and combatants at roughly 5 million and more than 38 million people displaced.
The War on Terror was a failure. Apart from failing to โbuild democracyโ in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and elsewhere, the number of terrorist attacks and victims today are three to five times higher annually than in 2001.
President Bushโs pledge to โsee freedomโs victoryโ has also become a farce at home. Today federal agencies meddle in our elections, spy on political campaigns, promote censorship, propagandize the public, muzzle journalists, and surveil nonviolent US citizensโoften on account of their First Amendment speechโwith little to no political oversight. Today virtually all communications, including phone calls, texts, emails, social media activity, and web browsing are subject to government scrutiny. Federal agencies regularly purchase American consumer data and location information in bulk, and they do not need to show evidence that a US citizen is an โagent of a foreign powerโ to obtain search orders or access sensitive information; organizations required to hand over these records are prohibited from notifying the subject.
Initially intended for foreign terrorists, the authorities used to monitor and disrupt terrorism abroad have been quietly repurposed against Washingtonโs domestic enemies, including and especially the populist right.
If history has anything to say, this will only get worse if left to its own devices.
The Afghanistan withdrawal was not the end but the beginning of something: a new phase of the War on Terror. But this time the target wouldnโt be Afghanistan, Iraq, or Syria, but the United Statesโthe homeland.
It is high time to close the book on this sordid chapter in our history, and it begins with a proper understanding of the War on Terror and how, in spite of its many failures, it has succeeded in providing Washington unlimited power, authority, and resources to operate independent of the consent of the governed.

Will the red heifer Ritual Sacrifice take place tomorrow as scheduled?
Republican members of the U.S. Congress recently met with a leader of the Third Temple movement, Yishak Mamo of Uvne Jerusalem, addressed the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance, convened by U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. CBS-TV described the meeting as a โwhoโs whoโ among fundamentalist Christian Zionists including Republican members of Congress. Mamo explained the practical achievements of the project and introduced Byron Stinson, the Texas rancher who helped breed the red heifers. Stinson told the audience that constructing the Third Temple would usher in the Battle of Armageddon and the second coming of Jesus.
