According to the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile, the epicenter of the tremor occurred in the commune of Melipilla, 57 km deep, and registered a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale.
Chile is located in the southeastern part of the Pacific circle of fire, the most seismic zone in the world, and suffers hundreds of small tremors due to the subduction of the Nasca plate under the South American Plate.
