Nationalist (of various shades) may hold the balance of power in the European Parliament after the upcoming election.

Identity and Democracy, a coalition of nationalist parties, is likely to increase its share of seats in the parliament from 58 to as many as 90, some polls even have them coming in over 100 seats.

The "true conservatives" in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) are also likely to increase their share of seats from a current 67 to over 80.

Ursula von der Leyen, the current EU commission president, won her mandate by only 9 votes in 2019.

Nationalists and hardline anti-EU Conservatives may just gain enough seat to play kingmaker in the next EU parliament.

This kingmaker role is going to be crucial, as the EU is currently pushing to transfer a substantial number of powers from memberstates to itself.
