To #EndMalaria, we have to address the inequity that drives it.

In 2022, malaria claimed the lives of over 600,000 people and there were 249 million new cases.

Alongside bed nets and other tools, vaccines could help to reignite progress against malaria, which has stalled in recent years.

On #WorldMalariaDay, let’s accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world.
I am deeply honoured and humbled to accept the award from Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery Murcia with the deepest gratitude.

WHO is also proud to have a close connection with the Region of Murcia, with whom we have collaborated for the past 15 years on the control of neglected tropical diseases, which trap generations in cycles of poverty and stigma.

Health is not a luxury for those who can afford it, it is a fundamental right for all people. That is the right for which I will keep striving.

Meningitis is a leading cause of disability.

Under the patronage of President Emmanuel Macron, WHO and France are convening a high-level meeting today to defeat meningitis.

We are grateful to the Paralympics for joining our effort to tackle the deadly disease, which will not only save lives, but will also save billions of dollars in health costs and lost productivity.

Merci beaucoup, mon frère President Emmanuel Macron, for an excellent discussion last Friday about the WHO Academy inauguration in Lyon later this year and its key role in the ongoing WHO transformation.

We are grateful for your sustained leadership on global health: to defeat meningitis; to conclude the #PandemicAccord negotiations; to ensure WHO is sustainably financed and has a successful Investment Round.

We value your support for our work in humanitarian crises: Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine.

We agree that health is a fundamental right and primary health care is the foundation for #HealthForAll, which all countries should prioritise and invest in.
Reaching all children with lifesaving vaccines is critical to #EndPolio. I joined the World Economic Forum Special Meeting yesterday alongside 🇵🇰 Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, 🇸🇦 Health Minister Fahad bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel, KS Relief Supervisor General Abdullah Al Rabeeah, BillGates and Anita Zaidi to talk about the urgency needed to accelerate last mile efforts toward a polio-free world.

We warmly welcome 🇸🇦’s announcement of $500 million towards polio eradication. With this new funding, Saudi Arabia will help to protect children in the hardest-to-reach areas. Shukran jazeelan!

There is enough money to cover all development priorities, but we choose to invest in war.

The most courageous choose peace.

In a world that seem more divided than ever, the need for solidarity – including across generations – has never been more urgent.

Let's fight ageism and create a world for all ages:

We owe a Pandemic agreement to:
- those who are still grieving the loss of someone they loved to COVID-19;
- to our children, grandchildren and to generations who have not even been born. They do not have to suffer as we suffered when the next pandemic strikes.

I called on the WHO Member States again to get it done: https://www.who.int/director-general/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-remarks-at-the-resumed-session-of-the-ninth-meeting-of-the-intergovernmental-negotiating-body---3-may-2024

Happy International Day of the Midwife.

Midwives play a vital role in sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, and deliver services that could save over 4 million lives a year.

Thank you all for your commitment and dedication to saving lives.

WHO calls for removal of all obstacles to the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance into and across Gaza, at the scale that is required.

A ceasefire is needed urgently for the sake of humanity.
Two days ago, amid intensified bombardment in Rafah, a WHO staff member's home was destroyed due to an airstrike in its vicinity; he was injured, along with his spouse and one child. His 7 year old niece was killed.

We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and loss. Other colleagues have suffered such losses over these last 7 months.

We are supporting our colleague and his family to get medical care.

This is another devastating example of how unsafe it is in Rafah and across Gaza.

We call for the protection of all humanitarian workers and all civilians. We call for a ceasefire.
Happy International Nurses Day!

WHO and partners salute all the nurses around the world for their dedication to protecting and saving lives.

We continue to call on leaders to invest in improving training and working conditions for nurses. There will be no #HealthForAll without well trained nurses.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to send the world back into the era before antibiotics and other antimicrobials, when a routine infection could be deadly.

Addressing AMR, and preventing its further spread, requires leadership from all Member States, accountable stakeholders, and sustained financial support.

Ahead of the UNGA high-level meeting, I thank communities, health workers, youth organizations, parliamentarians, the private sector and the people directly affected by drug-resistant infections for joining yesterday’s multi-stakeholder hearing.

By working together, we can chart a clear path towards a safer world for all.

The situation in Gaza remains beyond catastrophic.

What is needed now more than ever is a ceasefire and to get aid flowing into the Strip.
