South African police say 87 people have been arrested across the country in connection with opposition protests. Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Monday that most of the arrests were made in Gauteng province.

Cele said over 24,000 tyres have been confiscated by police in different towns. He said police are working with the military to maintain calm.

Opposition party the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is leading the so-called national shutdown. Colleagues from SAMU.ZA reported that protests kicked off on Sunday evening. EFF previously assured that demonstrations would start on Monday.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ή U.S. determines all sides committed war crimes in Ethiopia conflict

The United States has determined that all sides committed war crimes during the conflict in northern Ethiopia that killed tens of thousands of people, left hundreds of thousands facing hunger and displaced millions, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.

Blinken said that after a careful review of the law and facts, the State Department determined that members of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF), Eritrean Defense Force, forces loyal to the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and regional forces from Amhara committed war crimes during the conflict.

Members of the ENDF, Eritrean forces, and Amhara forces also committed crimes against humanity, Blinken told reporters, including murder, rape and other forms of sexual violence and persecution.

Blinken said he discussed with both sides in his meetings in Addis Ababa last week that there must be acknowledgement for the atrocities committed by all parties, as well as accountability.

European Union election observers said on Monday at least 21 people were killed during Nigeria's regional elections, which were marked by intimidation and violence.

Nigerians voted for state governors in 28 of 36 states on Saturday. Results were still expected from several states on Monday.

"Polling on election day was again disrupted by multiple incidences of thuggery, intimidation of voters, polling officials, observers and journalists and this occurred in most of the states," European Union Observer Mission Nigeria chief observer told.

He said, however, there were some improvements in Saturday's vote compared to last month's presidential poll. Election materials arrived on time at most polling units, which opened early while electronic voting machines worked better than last month.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡³ Senegal leader says it's legal to seek third term

Senegal's president has rejected claims that it would be unconstitutional for him to seek a controversial third mandate.

Macky Sall's comments are likely to fuel an already tense political climate. Critics of Sall accuse his government of using the courts to sideline the opposition politician, Ousmane Sonko.

The constitution in Senegal was amended in 2016 to shorten a presidential term from seven to five years. It states that no-one can serve more than two consecutive terms which the opposition says clearly prevents Sall from running in next year's election.
