๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น Somalia will defend itself if Ethiopia seals 'illegal' port deal, president says

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said his country would "defend itself" if Ethiopia goes ahead with a deal to set up a naval base in the breakaway region of Somaliland and possibly recognise the territory as an independent state.

"If Ethiopia insists, Somalia will resist and will refuse," Mohamud told. "If they come into the country, Somalia will do everything that it can to defend itself."

Mohamud said he would only agree to discuss the matter with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed when the government in Addis Ababa renounces its intention "to take part of our country".

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ณ Sudan's warring sides commit abuses, including strikes on fleeing civilians, UN report says

Both sides in Sudan's civil war have committed abuses that may amount to war crimes including indiscriminate attacks on civilian sites like hospitals, markets and even camps for the displaced, the U.N. human rights office said.

"Some of these violations would amount to war crimes," Volker Turk, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement accompanying the report. "The guns must be silenced, and civilians must be protected."

The United Nations report is based on interviews with over 300 victims and witnesses as well as footage and satellite imagery.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ Zimbabwe wants lithium miners to plan new capacity despite price dive

Zimbabwe wants miners to come forward by the end of March with plans to produce battery-grade lithium, despite a sharp fall in global prices for the mineral, a senior government official said.

Africa's top lithium producer Zimbabwe in November gave miners the March deadline to submit plans for the local production of battery-grade lithium, used in electric vehicles and clean energy storage, as it hopes to benefit from a global shift from polluting fuels.

Although some lithium producers in Zimbabwe are reportedly to be struggling for viability at the current price levels, Deputy Mines Minister Polite Kambamura told the government still wanted miners to put forward firm plans for building processing capacity.

"As government, we are not going backwards on beneficiation. We would like to urge all lithium players to come forward to the ministry with their beneficiation plans," Kambamura said.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด Ethiopia, UK signed an MoU over Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia border security

Ethiopia and the United Kingdom on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) โ€œEnhance Peace and Stability in the Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia Borderโ€

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MFAE) said it โ€œaims to boost the resilience of communities across the Ethiopia-Kenya-Somali borders to the drivers of violent extremism.โ€

It seems that the border security agreement was signed within the context of threat from Al-Shabaab. While the agreement is concerning โ€œKenya-Somalia-Ethiopia Border,โ€ Kenya and Somalia were not a party to this MoU agreement. However, Kenya had signed an agreement with Ethiopia this week.

โ€œThe two sides [Ethiopia and UK] expressed their commitment to working together to reduce the threat posed by Al-Shabaab in the region,โ€ said the news update from the MFAE.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ณ Italy arrests 12 people over speed boat migrant trips from Tunisia

Italian police said on Wednesday they had arrested 12 suspected human traffickers for allegedly organising high-speed transfers for at least 73 illegal migrants from Tunisia to Europe.

The traffickers transferred relatively small groups of up to 20 people on each of four trips, charging fees of up to 6,000 euros per person, the statement said.

Six Tunisians and six Italians were detained as part of an investigation coordinated by European police body Europol and the Italian anti-mafia police unit.

The investigators identified a Tunisian former police officer as the head of the trafficking organisation.

They also held 19 illegal migrants and arrested eight Tunisian boat operators last year during the initial part of the investigation. Four of the boat crew were also charged over firing naval flares at a military vessel during an attempt to evade being apprehended by authorities.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ณ Tunisia court sentences ex-president Marzouki to 8 years in absentia

A Tunisian court sentenced former President Moncef Marzouki to eight years in prison in absentia on Friday on charges of assaulting the state security and inciting Tunisians against each other, a judicial official said.

This is the second prison sentence against Marzouki, who resides in Paris, after a judge sentenced him in 2021 to four years in absentia.

Mohamed Zitouna, the spokesperson of the Tunis court, said the verdict was based on statements by Marzouki that included incitement in a speech he gave in Paris.

Marzouki, who was president from 2011 to 2014, is a fierce critic of President Kais Saied.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ช West African ECOWAS bloc mulls new strategy towards junta states

The West African regional bloc should consider a change of strategy as it seeks to persuade junta-led countries "to restore democracy and remain in the alliance", its chairman said.

Leaders of the ECOWAS are meeting to address a political crisis in the coup-hit region which deepened in January with military-ruled Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali's decision to exit the 15-member union.

"I urge them to reconsider the decision of these three nations to exit and not to perceive our organisation as the enemy," said ECOWAS chairman and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. "We must reexamine our current approach to the quest for constitutional order."

He did not give further details, but the comments will add to expectations that ECOWAS is readying to ease or lift sanctions on Niger.

The West African regional bloc said on Saturday it would lift strict sanctions on Niger and Guinea.

After closed-door talks, ECOWAS said it had decided to lift Niger sanctions including border closures, the freezing of central bank and state assets, and the suspension of commercial transactions with immediate effect.

It said this was done for humanitarian reasons, but the move will be seen as a gesture of appeasement as ECOWAS tries to persuade the three junta states to remain in the alliance.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ South Africa's governing ANC promises "better life" at manifesto launch

South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa said on Saturday that his party, the African National Congress (ANC), would build on the successes of the last three decades and work to resolve the country's challenges of high unemployment, crime and poverty should it win decisively at the polls.

"We cannot take all this progress for granted, we need to do more and better together" Ramaphosa told. He promised to transform the economy and tackle the high cost of living.

Ramaphosa also said his party's leadership "has been at the forefront of constructing the new South Africa."

He added that the country has made progress that's "given rise to an independent judiciary, free media and free and fair elections."

Recent polls suggest the ANC is at risk of losing its parliamentary majority in the May 29.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ DR Congo's president accuses Rwanda of looting with EU support

The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo said he was open to a dialogue with his Rwandan counterpart for peace but lashed out against an agreement recently signed between Rwanda and the European Union on mining.

โ€œItโ€™s a provocation in very bad taste,โ€ said President Felix Tshisekedi.

Tshiseked alleged Rwanda was plundering Congo's mineral resources.

He criticized an agreement signed between the EU and Rwanda earlier this week linked to the strengthening of their cooperation in the mining sector, particularly with regard to critical raw materials such as tantalum.

Rwanda should not export wealth that it does not have, he said.

With the proceeds of these illicit sales, they will equip their armies and continue their ambitions in the Congo, he added.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Escalation in east DR Congo puts Uganda on alert

Security agencies in Uganda are on high alert following renewed fighting in the restive eastern DR Congo, which has seen disruption of business between the two countries, an influx of refugees, and fears that the war could spill over across the border.

Since January, fighting between the Congolese national army and the M23 rebel group in the North Kivu Province has seen thousands of civilians displaced, with many trekking into Uganda.

Ugandaโ€™s Defence Public Information Officer spokesperson said the army has increased surveillance and deployment around the common border to avert any violence spillover.

Between September 2023 and January 2024, Uganda received more than 35,900 Congolese asylum seekers, according to the UNHCR.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Uganda denies supporting DR Congo's M23 rebels

Ugandan authorities have denied claims that Kampala is backing the deadly M23 rebels in the war in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The claims have been fuelled on social media in the DRC, with politicians in particular adding fuel to the fire.

The rumour is echoed by civil society figures and some former ministers, who claim that the Ugandan army is playing a double game: on the one hand, it is supporting the DRC army in a war against the Allied Democratic Forces, while on the other it is playing for the rebels when it comes to the war against the M23.

The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) issued a statement saying that "the UPDF has no reason to get involved in an internal conflict unless it is a regional peace effort".
