The scope of a federal obstruction law used against scores of Jan. 6 rioters — and former President Trump — drew scrutiny from the Supreme Court on Tuesday, a signal that the justices may be wary of the Justice Department’s far-reaching prosecution of the Capitol attack.

Joseph Fischer, a former police officer accused of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, challenged the law in an effort to eliminate one of several counts he faces: obstruction of an official proceeding.

The law, Section 1512(c)(2), makes it a crime to “corruptly” obstruct, impede or interfere with official inquiries and investigations by Congress and carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The billionaire George Soros has donated $60 million to Democracy PAC, a super political action committee he uses to support Democrats, the second-biggest campaign donation in the 2024 election cycle.

A nonprofit founded and funded by Soros gave cash to boost the campaigns of congressional Democrats, pro-choice campaigners and black candidates in down-ballot races, a filing with the Federal Election Commission shows.

Democracy PAC spread $21 million to a dozen super PACs in the first quarter, including $4 million donations to both the House Majority PAC and the Senate Majority PAC.

It gave $2.5 million to Planned Parenthood Votes, and the same sum to Black PAC, which boosts candidates in state-level races for governors, attorneys general and lawmakers.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered the closure of his country’s embassy and consulates in Ecuador on Tuesday in solidarity with Mexico in its protest over a raid by Ecuadorian authorities on the Mexican embassy in Quito.

Venezuela also “fully supports” Mexico’s request to have the United Nations suspend Ecuador from the world body, Maduro said during a virtual meeting of the leaders of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa ordered authorities to raid the Mexican diplomatic outpost April 5 to arrest the country’s former Vice President Jorge Glas, a convicted criminal and fugitive who was holed up at the embassy since December. Mexico granted him asylum hours before the raid.

The foreign aid plan Speaker Johnson, R-La., unveiled on Monday night is already facing a growing red wave of opposition from his own colleagues as of Tuesday morning, making it likely he will have to seek House Democratic support to get the proposal passed.

Under Johnson’s tentative plan, aid for Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel would all be considered as separate bills. A fourth bill would combine miscellaneous national security priorities, including the House’s recently passed bill that could pave the way to a TikTok ban and the REPO Act, a bipartisan measure to liquefy seized Russian assets and send that money to Ukraine.
