🇪🇸🇬🇶 Spain investigates whether Equatorial Guinean officials tortured opponents

Equatorial Guinea's vice-president Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, who is also the son of the president, has accused the country’s former colonial power Spain of "interference."

The allegation comes after Spain’s judiciary opened an investigation into the "kidnapping" and "torture" of two Spanish nationals, Feliciano Efa Mangue and Julio Obama Mefuman, in the West African state’s capital Malabo. Both were opponents of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo's regime.

He is now 80 years old and has been in power since 1979, which makes him the longest-serving president in Africa.

🇬🇶 Equatorial Guinea President's son arrested for alleged corruption

Son of Equatorial Guineas president, Ruslan Obiang Nsue, has been arrested and placed under house arrest on suspicion of selling a plane belonging to the country's national airline.

At the end of November, the authorities had opened an investigation "after noticing the disappearance of the ATR 72-500 aircraft belonging to the national company", Ceiba Intercontinental, which was since 2018 in routine revision in Spain.

According to the same source, Mr. Obiang Nsue, would have "sold the ATR aircraft to the company Binter Technic", which specializes in aviation maintenance and is based in Las Palmas, on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria.

The arrest of Ruslan Obiang Nsue, one of the president's sons, is unprecedented for a member of the presidential family of Equatorial Guinea.

🇬🇶 The opponent of president in Equatorial Guinea died in prison

A prominent dissident in Equatorial Guinea has died in prison. Julio Obama Mefuman, who was also a Spanish citizen and was taken from South Sudan in a suspected kidnapping in 2019, “died in Oveng Azem prison” in the eastern city of Mongomo, the Movement for the Liberation of the Third Equatorial Guinea said.

It gave no date for Obama Mefuman’s death but accused the country’s hardline government of “torture”. On Monday, Equatorial Guinea’s foreign minister Simeon Oyono Esono Angue said Obama Mefuman “died in a Mongomo hospital following illness” but refuted any accusation of torture.

Obama Mefuman’s death came less than two weeks after Spain’s High Court announced an investigation into his suspected kidnapping and torture. In March 2020, Obama Mefuman was given 60 years sentence for allegedly having taken part in an attempted coup against Obiang in 2017.

Nine people have died of Marburg virus disease, a hemorrhagic fever nearly as deadly as Ebola, in eastern Equatorial Guinea.

Last week, the government announced it was investigating suspected cases of hemorrhagic fever. Only three people with "mild symptoms" of the disease are currently isolated in a hospital in this sparsely populated rural area bordering Gabon and Cameroon.

A "containment plan has been put in place" in close collaboration with the UN World Health Organization WHO "to deal with the epidemic".
