🇳🇬🇮🇹 Nigeria withdraws $1.1 bln claim against Eni on oilfield deal

Nigeria is withdrawing civil claims totalling $1.1 billion against Italian energy group Eni and related to allegations of corruption in a oilfield deal, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

Nigeria's justice ministry will waive the claims before Italy's highest court "unconditionally" and "with immediate effect" no later than November 17, the report said.

An Eni spokesperson confirmed that the group had received the letter regarding OPL 245, and said it was pleased about the Nigerian government's decision.

The energy group added it was ready to consider - together with the government of Nigeria - the necessary steps for achieving the conversion of the licence from prospecting into mining, to ensure development perspectives for the field.

🇮🇹🌍 Meloni looks to reset Italy's relations with Africa during a summit in Rome

African leaders converge on Rome this weekend for a summit where Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will finally unveil a strategic plan aimed at redefining Italy's relations with the continent and curbing immigration.

The so-called Mattei Plan, named after the late Enrico Mattei who founded Italian energy giant Eni in the 1950s, has been billed as a cornerstone of Meloni's foreign policy as she looks to enhance Rome's diplomatic footprint.

More than 20 heads of state and government will be in Rome for the event, which kicks off with a dinner on Sunday ahead of the official summit on Monday.

While the details of the plan have been kept secret, Italy has said it wants to serve as a transit hub for African energy while stimulating investment in an effort to curb illegal immigration across the Mediterranean.

🇰🇪🇮🇹 Kenya endorses Italy's Africa plan despite criticism over funding

Kenya's president endorsed Italy's plan for closer cooperation with Africa, saying it was evidence that Europe was taking the continent seriously despite criticism over the limited initial funding.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni unveiled an initiative aimed at helping African countries prosper in return for curbing illegal immigration, pumping a preliminary 5.5 billion euros into the scheme.

Kenyan President William Ruto told that the plan represented a good start.

"Every journey begins with one simple step. And I think that the most important step has been made, that we are recalibrating our relationship with Italy as a continent," Ruto said.

The Kenyan leader said that he was confident Meloni would honour her pledge to promote African interests during her presidency.

"The narrative around Africa was conflict, disease, war. Now it's changing. It is opportunity, investment, market and solutions," he said.
