๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ World Bank approves new Tanzania loans worth $1.14 bln

The World Bank has approved two separate loans worth about $1.14 billion combined to Tanzania to support its private sector, develop its commercial capital and fight effects of climate change, the bank said.

The first tranche of financing worth $750 million - called Development Policy Financing - is meant to finance reforms such as making business licensing faster and also broaden access to cheap credit to accelerate private sector growth, the bank said.

The second lot of $385 million will go towards financing infrastructure and building institutions that will help Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam to cope with the effects of climate change, the bank said.

"Tanzania remains very vulnerable to climate change and is limited in its preparedness to adapt and respond to the adverse impacts," World Bank country director for Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania said.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Collapse of goldmine in Tanzania kills 22

The collapse of an illegal small-scale gold mine has killed at least 22 people in northern Tanzania following heavy rains, a senior government official said on Sunday.

The accident happened early on Saturday in the Simiyu region after a group of people aged between 24 and 38 years old started mining in an area where activity had been restricted due to ongoing heavy rains, the region's Bariadi district commissioner told.

"Initially we were told that there were 19 to 20 people who were trapped in the mines but unfortunately we ended up retrieving 22 bodies," he said, adding that the search and rescue operation was continuing although almost all the rubble that had buried them had now been removed.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช Tanzania bans Kenya Airways flights in tit-for-tat move

Tanzania's aviation authority has said that it will not permit any Kenya Airways flights from Nairobi to land in Dar es Salaam from next Monday.

There are usually three scheduled services on this leg of the route every day.

The decision to prevent the flights comes in retaliation to a move by Kenya to not allow any all-cargo flights operated by Air Tanzania to land in Nairobi, a statement from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) said.

It added that Kenya's move went against a 2016 agreement between the two countries.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช Tanzania says it has lifted ban on Kenya Airways flights

Tanzania said on Tuesday it had reinstated approval for Kenyan national carrier Kenya Airways, opens new tab to operate flights between the Kenyan capital Nairobi and Tanzania's commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

In a tit-for-tat move, Tanzania announced on Monday it had banned Kenya Airways flights after Nairobi refused to grant a request to Tanzania's national carrier Air Tanzania to operate cargo flights between both nations.

"Following this development, the aeronautical authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania hereby withdraw its decision of 15 January 2024 and therefore approval for Kenya Airways to operate between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, is hereby restored," state-run Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority said.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Tanzania central bank sets new policy rate at 5.5%

Tanzania's central bank on Friday set its main interest rate at 5.5% in a bid to contain inflation within its target and boost economic growth.

The announcement is the first by the Bank of Tanzania since it said earlier this month that it would start using a benchmark interest rate to signal its monetary policy direction.

"The decision on the CBR (Central Bank Rate) considered the need to contain inflation within the medium-term target of 5%, while supporting economic growth to reach 5.5% or more in 2024," central bank governor Emmanuel Tutuba said.

Inflation in the east African nation fell to 3% in December from 3.2% in November.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Destruction as floods wreak havoc in Tanzania

Floods have damaged houses and roads and killed an unspecified number of people after heavy rains pounded Tanzania's commercial capital of Dar es Salaam for two days.

Some houses near rivers collapsed and some roads and bridges were destroyed, making it difficult to navigate through the city.

The main Bagamoyo road that joins the city to the northern regions was inaccessible on Sunday after a downpour flooded the area.

Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Sunday asked citizens to take precautions by avoiding affected areas. She also called on the rescue authorities to make sure that the rains do not cause deaths.

The Tanzania Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy rains for the rest of this month.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Tanzania prepares for opposition protests over poll reforms

Tanzania's main opposition party, Chadema, is planning to hold protests to denounce proposed electoral bills, the high cost of living and delays to constitutional reforms.

Police have allowed the party to hold the march in the commercial city of Dar es Salaam but warned against violence and incitement, local media reported.

Chadema said the permission was granted following a consensus with the police to allow peaceful demonstrations.

The party said it would lead the protests on Wednesday to pressure the government to carry out the reforms ahead of next year's general election.

It is opposed to three electoral bills tabled in parliament last November. The party wants them withdrawn on the grounds that the views of many stakeholders were not considered.

Local government elections are scheduled for later this year.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Tanzania opposition held protest to demand constitutional reform

Tanzania's political opposition held its first major protest in years on Wednesday to demand constitutional changes to reduce presidential powers and reform of the electoral commission ahead of a general election due next year.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan last year lifted a ban on most political rallies that her predecessor John Magufuli had imposed in 2016 and has eased other restrictions on media and opposition parties.

Wednesday's protest in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam was called by the opposition Party for Democracy and Progress, known as CHADEMA.

CHADEMA says it is impossible to have free and fair elections next year under the current constitution, which was adopted in 1977 when Tanzania was under single-party rule. Protesters also called on authorities to bring down the cost of living.

Zanzibar's Minister of Tourism and Heritage Simai Mohamed Said has resigned citing "unfavourable and disruptive working conditions" in the Tanzanian archipelago.

In a statement, Mr Said said he submitted his resignation letter to the islands' President Hussein Mwinyi on Thursday.

"I have made this difficult decision, which is not easy in our culture," he added.

"I will continue to be loyal to the government and my party, the Revolutionary Party."

His resignation came a few days after he reportedly complained about a shortage of alcohol in Zanzibar, saying it was affecting the tourism sector.

About 90% of Zanzibar`s economy depends on tourism.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Tanzania's TPDC doubles gas field stake in deal with Maurel & Prom

State-run Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has paid $23.6 million to double its shareholding in the Mnazi Bay natural gas field under an agreement with French energy company Maurel & Prom.

The Mnazi Bay gas field, in the Mtwara region of the country's south, has an estimated 641 billion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas reserves and contributes nearly half of the gas used to generate electricity in the East African country.

Mussa Makame, TPDC's managing director, said the company had doubled its ownership in the asset to 40% after acquiring an additional 20% stake from Maurel & Prom.

Initially the field was jointly owned by Maurel & Prom, TPDC and Wentworth Resources. But after Maurel and Prom agreed to acquire Wentworth Resources' 31.9% stake, TPDC exercised its rights to buy a part of the shareholding that belonged to Wentworth.
