πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈKennedy, Graham introduce Ending the NARCOS Act to designate nine major Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) today joined Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) in introducing the Ending the Notorious, Aggressive and Remorseless Criminal Organizations and Syndicates (NARCOS) Act of 2023 to designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

The legislation would also create a task force for the purpose of eliminating the threat that cartels and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, pose to American citizens.

By designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, the U.S. government would have authority to prosecute individuals for drug and human trafficking. America could also use extraterritorial jurisdiction to target and prosecute foreign nationals involved with Mexican cartels or other transnational criminal organizations.

The Act designates the following cartels as foreign terrorist organizations:

β–ͺ️The Sinaloa Cartel
β–ͺ️The Jalisco New Generation Cartel
β–ͺ️The Gulf Cartel
β–ͺ️The Los Zetas Cartel
β–ͺ️The Northeast Cartel
β–ͺ️The Juarez Cartel
β–ͺ️The Tijuana Cartel
β–ͺ️The Beltran-Levya Cartel
β–ͺ️The La Familia Michoacana, also known as the Knight Templar Cartel

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈTexas Gov. Greg Abbott mobilizes specialized units on Mexico border as Title 42 end approaches

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has mobilized special units to the southern border to assist the U.S. Border Patrol as the end of Title 42 approaches and large numbers of migrants are expected to cross into the United States.

Abbott told sheriffs from 33 counties that Texas will send units to keep an eye on the border and assist agents.

πŸ—£"Pull out your calculator and do the math. If you were to average that out on a daily basis across an entire year, it would mean more than six million people coming across the border in a single year," Abbott said during his speech.

Title 42 could expire on May 11. The order gives the federal government the power to expel migrants at the southern border. It is currently only allowed to prevent communicable diseases.

Mexico's president asked his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden to stop the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from funding groups hostile to his government, according to a letter presented to journalists on Wednesday.

πŸ—£"The U.S. government, specifically though USAID, has for some time been financing organizations openly against the legal and legitimate government I represent," he said in the letter.

"This is clearly an interventionist act, contrary to international law and the relations which should prevail between free and sovereign states."

The letter calls for Biden's intervention, saying the U.S. State Department in recent days announced that USAID would increase its funding toward such organizations.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Gun rights organizations sue New Mexico governor over gun violence order

The National Association for Gun Rights filed a lawsuit against New Mexico’s Democratic governor and health secretary Saturday over orders declaring gun violence a public health emergency and suspending open and concealed carry laws in cities and counties based on crime statistics.

The lawsuit, filed in the US district court for New Mexico on Saturday, lists Lujan Grisham and New Mexico Department of Health Secretary Patrick Allen as defendants.

The National Association for Gun Rights argues in the lawsuit that the orders violate the Second Amendment.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡²πŸ‡½ Border Patrol releases thousands of migrants on San Diego’s streets

U.S. Customs and Border Protection releases migrants to the streets of California’s second-largest city because shelters are full. Since Sept. 13, about 13,000 have been dropped at transit stations with notices to appear in immigration court at their final destinations in the U.S., with about 500 more arriving daily.

Migrant aid groups blame a mix of circumstances for the shelter crunch: reduced government funding; CBP’s practice of sending migrants from Texas and Arizona to be processed in San Diego; and a surge in illegal crossings.

Before they are released in San Diego, some migrants being dropped off have been waiting between a double-layer border wall or camping under Border Patrol watch in remote mountains east of the city. CBP closed a major pedestrian border crossing from Tijuana, Mexico, on Sept. 14 and assigned more officials to processing migrants.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Only 2,100 New York migrants applied for work authorization β€” none have been approved yet to fill reported 18,000 job openings

New York City officials reported Wednesday that only 2,100 of the more than 40,000 adult migrants in its shelter system have applied for work authorization.

In September, Biden’s Department of Homeland Security extended temporary legal status to hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers. Since the announcement, no migrant has received federal approval to work.

Approximately 472,000 Venezuelans who arrived in the country before July 31, 2023, are eligible for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months and legally able to work. The DHS extended the TPS status to the migrants β€œdue to extraordinary and temporary conditions in Venezuela that prevent individuals from safely returning.”

Following the DHS’ announcement, Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that her office identified 18,000 private-sector job openings in the state that migrants with legal work status would be eligible to fill.

On Wednesday, New York City officials admitted that a little over 2,000 migrants had applied for work permits and that not one individual had been approved so far.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Migrants now living in cars outside NYC hotel amid space crunch with area dubbed β€˜New Ellis Island’

The dire shortage of shelter space in NYC has forced some asylum seekers out onto the street and into cars parked in plain view outside the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan β€” which one official dubbed β€œa new Ellis Island,” a new report said.

At least four migrants who said they were booted from city shelters were spotted sleeping in cars in recent weeks just feet from the hotel that serves as the city’s main intake site for thousands of asylum seekers from the US border.

City officials have struggled to find space for the nearly 70,000 migrants from the US border who are being housed and fed by taxpayers β€” among the more than 165,000 who have arrived in the five boroughs since the spring of 2022.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Biden freezes licenses to export gas, imperiling projects

The Biden administration on Friday halted the approval of new licenses to export US liquefied natural gas while it scrutinizes how the shipments affect climate change, the economy and national security β€” a moratorium likely to disrupt plans for billions of dollars in projects.

πŸ—£β€œWe will take a hard look at the impacts of LNG exports on energy costs, America’s energy security and our environment,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.

β€œThis pause on new LNG approvals sees the climate crisis for what it is: the existential threat of our time.”

Texas is the country's largest natural gas exporter and the third largest in the world.
