The African Union (AU) has declared its "deep regret" over the decision this weekend by military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to pull out of the West African regional bloc, Ecowas.

In a statement on Tuesday from the AU's commission chairperson "calls on regional leaders to intensify the dialogue between the Ecowas leadership and the three aforementioned countries".

Nigeria had also rebuked Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger for leaving Ecowas, saying they were of letting their people down by quitting the group.

🇷🇺🇧🇫 Russian troops could deploy to Burkina Faso said the military leader

Burkina Faso's military-backed president has said Russian troops could deploy to fight jihadists in the country, if needed.

Ibrahim Traore said Russia was offering logistical and tactical training and was willing to sell whatever weapons were required by Burkina Faso.

Traore said there were no restrictions on what could be bought from Russia, China, Turkey or Iran, unlike other countries.

His comments come amid reports that some 100 Russian fighters were last week sent to the African country as military instructors.

The development also fuels speculation of Burkina Faso deepening security ties with Russia like neighbouring Mali.

🇧🇫 Burkina Faso suspends export permits for small-scale gold production

Burkina Faso's military government has suspended the issuance of export permits for artisanal and semi-mechanised gold and other precious commodities with immediate effect, it said.

"This suspension follows the need to clean up the sector and reflects the government's desire to better organise the marketing of gold and other precious substances," it said in a statement dated February 20.

It did not say how long the suspension would be in place.

Mining groups who have material to export are invited to reach out to the National Society for Precious Commodities (SONAP) for compensation, it added.

Gold is Burkina Faso's main export, accounting for 37% of total exports in 2020, and mining is a leading source of jobs.
