🇸🇿 Eswatini opposition politician was killed

Gunmen in Eswatini killed an opposition politician and human rights lawyer at his home.

Thulani Maseko was shot dead on Saturday night by unknown attackers in Luhleko, about 50km from the capital Mbabane. An opposition spokesman said he was told that “assassins shot him through the window while he was inside the house with his family”. No more details are given.

The government sent condolences to the family, saying Maseko’s death was a “loss for the nation” and that police were searching for the killers.

Maseko was a leading human rights lawyer and columnist in Eswatini who had a pending court battle with King Mswati III over the monarch’s decision to rename the country Eswatini by decree.

🇸🇿🇹🇼 Eswatini PM denounces "bullying" of Taiwan

Eswatini Prime Minister Cleopas Dlamini said in Taipei on Monday that his country remains committed to diplomatic relations with Taiwan and is opposed to "any sort of bullying or aggression" against Taiwan.

"The people of Taiwan should be governed within Taiwan by a government they elect themselves in fair and free elections, with no external pressure," Dlamini said during a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen.

Dlamini also thanked the Taiwan government for its decades-long support of Eswatini.

Eswatini is the only African state and one of 14 countries worldwide that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan - which China regards as a breakaway province.

🇸🇿 Eswatini Members of Parliament who protested against king's rule convicted

A court in Eswatini has found two lawmakers guilty of murder and terrorism for their role in a wave of protests that hit the country in 2021. Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube face up to 20 years in jail.

The two were detained after taking part in protests against last absolute monarchy in Africa. They pleaded not guilty to inciting unrest.

Amnesty International said the convictions were evidence of the country's continuing crackdown on dissent.

Protesters, angered by economic decline, have become increasingly vocal in demanding political reform.

🇸🇿 Eswatini holds parliamentary elections

Voters in Eswatini will cast their ballots on Friday in parliamentary elections whose outcome will make little difference to the politics of a country controlled by Africa's last absolute monarch.

King Mswati III has ruled the southern African kingdom of about 1.2 million people since 1986, when he inherited the crown from his father, Sobhuza II.

Political parties are banned, but individual candidates can run for seats in the House of Assembly every five years.

The power of the politicians elected in these polls consists mainly of being able to make suggestions to the king, who is free to ignore them.

🇸🇿 Eswatini announces parliamentary election results under monarch's rule

Fifty one men and eight women were elected to Eswatini's parliament in last week's election, with a strong showing for pro-royalist candidates.

The southern Africa nation has been ruled by King Mswati III since 1986, when he inherited the crown from his father, Sobhuza II. It went to the polls on Friday to elect politicians who effectively function as the king's advisers with no executive power. The electoral commission published the results on Monday.

Of the parliamentarians elected in Eswatini, which changed its name from Swaziland in 2018, most were seen as being loyal to the king and also included former journalists and teachers.

In addition to the 59 elected members of parliament, the king will appoint 10 more to the House of Assembly at his discretion.

🇸🇿 Eswatini denies reports kingdom facing shortage of men

The Kingdom of Eswatini has denied reports that it was offering nationality to citizens from southern Africa to fill up for shortage of men in the country.

It follows a viral fake letter purportedly written by King Mswati III expressing concern with "scarcity of men" in the kingdom.

The letter claimed the king would facilitate the willing men from southern Africa to marry wives and get free houses from the kingdom.

"The public is notified that this circulating notice is fake," the Eswatini government said.

It is not clear who authored the fake letter which had excited some social media users from southern Africa.
