🇧🇫🇷🇺 Burkina Faso thanks Russia for "priceless gift" of wheat

Burkina Faso says it has received 25,000 tonnes of free wheat from Russia.

Speaking at a ceremony on Friday, Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré said the wheat consignment from Russia would help to push his nation towards "developing our own production capacity in order to halt once and for all dependence on food from abroad".

Burkina Faso's minister for solidarity and humanitarian action said the government was "delighted" and called the grain delivery a "priceless gift" that would benefit people who were internally displaced and vulnerable.

🇪🇺🇷🇺🌍 EU's top diplomat says Russian influence causing dilemma in Sahel

The European Union is facing a dilemma over its remaining presence West African Sahel region, since it does not want to cooperate with Russia's expanding military forces, its top diplomat said.

The decision by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to withdraw from ECOWAS has further complicated EU presence in the region, the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.

"It is very significant that these three states, all of them with military dictatorships, decided to leave the regional body at the same time that we see the Russian influence increase," Borrell said.

"This creates a new geopolitical configuration of this area."

He added that Russia's presence was already strong in Mali and could be soon in Niger and Burkina Faso. The EU has until May 24 to decide whether or not to stay in Mali, Borrell said.

🇷🇺🇧🇫 Russian troops could deploy to Burkina Faso said the military leader

Burkina Faso's military-backed president has said Russian troops could deploy to fight jihadists in the country, if needed.

Ibrahim Traore said Russia was offering logistical and tactical training and was willing to sell whatever weapons were required by Burkina Faso.

Traore said there were no restrictions on what could be bought from Russia, China, Turkey or Iran, unlike other countries.

His comments come amid reports that some 100 Russian fighters were last week sent to the African country as military instructors.

The development also fuels speculation of Burkina Faso deepening security ties with Russia like neighbouring Mali.

🇷🇺🇫🇷🌍 Putin addresses French president's concerns over Russian presence in Africa

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that heightened Russian influence in Africa has caused an "emotional reaction" in French President Emmanuel Macron.

“I think there is some kind of resentment, but when we maintained direct contacts with him (Macron), we spoke quite openly on this topic,” Putin said.

Putin also maintained that Russia did not "go into Africa and force France out," and that Macron's main problem was to do with Wagner being a Russian organisation.

“It’s probably more convenient to be offended by someone without seeing your own problems. Perhaps such an acute, rather emotional reaction on the part of the French President is also connected with what is happening in some African states,” he added.

Putin said that he was not "inciting anyone" and was not setting anyone up against France.

🇺🇸🇳🇪🇷🇺🇮🇷 US warned Niger about ties to Russia, Iran before junta revoked accord, Pentagon says

U.S. officials traveled to Niger last week to express concerns about the country's potential development of ties to Russia and Iran before the ruling junta on Saturday revoked an accord governing the roughly 1,000 U.S. military personnel there, the Pentagon said on Monday.

The Pentagon added it was "seeking clarification about the way ahead. "

Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said the U.S. government had "direct and frank" conversations in Niger ahead of the junta's announcement, and was continuing to communicate with Niger's ruling military council.

"The U.S. delegation was there to raise a number of concerns. We were troubled about the path that Niger is on. And so these were direct and frank conversations, to have those in person, to talk about our concerns and to also hear theirs," Singh said.

"U.S. officials expressed concern over Niger's potential relationships with Russia and Iran."

🇸🇩🇷🇺 Russia begins diesel exports to Sudan, LSEG data shows

Russia has begun diesel exports to Sudan as Moscow seeks new markets for its refined products after an EU embargo, LSEG data shows.
Since the full EU embargo on Russian oil product imports was imposed in February 2023, diesel supplies have been diverted to Brazil, Turkey, countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East as well as ship-to-ship (STS) loadings.

LSEG data shows that two fuel tankers - Pavo Rock and Conga - delivered a total of about 70,000 metric tons of ultra-low sulphur diesel to Sudan after it was loaded in February at the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk.

The cargoes discharged at Port Sudan Al Khair Terminal on April 2 and April 5, shipping data shows.
Another vessel - the Marabella Sun - loaded in March at the Russian Baltic port of Vysotsk, is heading towards Port Sudan and should be discharged on April 17, LSEG data shows.

📌 Sudan needs about 45,000 barrels per day (bpd) of diesel (about 6,000 tons per day) to meet local demand.

The country imports 60,000-70,000 metric tons of diesel a month, mainly from Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Diesel arrivals in Sudan totalled about 116,000 metric tons in March, the LSEG data shows.

🇳🇪🇷🇺🇺🇸✈️ Russian troops enter Niger Air Base hosting US Forces amid Junta's expulsion order

According to an anonymous senior U.S. defense official, Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger, where U.S. troops are stationed.

This development comes after Niger's junta ordered the expulsion of U.S. forces from the country. The military rulers of Niger have instructed the U.S. to withdraw its approximately 1,000 military personnel. Russian forces are reportedly utilizing a separate hangar at Airbase 101 in Niamey, Niger's capital, without mingling with the U.S. troops.

This situation places U.S. and Russian troops in close proximity amid escalating military and diplomatic tensions over the conflict in Ukraine, prompting concerns about the future of U.S. installations in Niger after the withdrawal.
