🇹🇿 Tanzania opposition holds first rally since ban lifted Thousands of supporters from Tanzania’s main opposition party Chadema are flocking to the venue, in the city of Mwanza, of its first rally since a six-and-a-half-year ban on such gatherings was lifted…
🇹🇿 President Hassan’s decision to end a six-year ban on political gatherings has been lauded by the opposition

On Saturday, Chadema, Tanzania’s main opposition party, held its first public rally in more than six years in the northwestern city of Mwanza just three weeks after President Samia Suluhu Hassan lifted a ban on political gatherings imposed in 2016.

While addressing the party’s cheering supporters, Chadema leader, Freeman Mbowe, was in a conciliatory mood, urging those gathered to shun hate against ruling party supporters and their leaders as he showered praise on President Hassan.

“Without shame, I stand before you and the world to thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan, for the way she was patient in many meetings that we held as I convinced her to realise the need for reconciliation in this country. This president accepted reconciliation,” said Mbowe.

🇪🇬 Founder of Egypt’s Juhayna Food Industries and his son released from prison

The founder and former CEO of Juhayna Food Industries and his son were released from prison in Egypt on Saturday after about two years in detention. Juhayna, a listed company, is the country's largest dairy products and juices producer.

The authorities accused them of belonging to and financing a terrorist group - commonly a reference to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The two were never convicted. Amnesty International reported in 2021 that authorities were holding the Thabets because of their refusal to cede assets to a state entity.

There was no immediate official statement from authorities on the release. A member of the family told the two men were released from a police station and returned home, but said the family had no other information about why they were freed.

“It will not be fair to impose the tariff on our people while there is load shedding,” Ramaphosa said.

🇮🇹🇪🇬 Italy's foreign minister meets with Egyptian officials on migration

Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, held talks with Egyptian officials in Cairo that focused on regional security and the conflict in neighboring Libya, as well as sensitive bilateral issues.

The main topic of talks was illegal migration to Italy. Though Egypt has largely prevented departures of migrant boats from its own north coast since 2016, the number of Egyptian nationals crossing to Europe via Libya has risen sharply.

Tajani said his meeting with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi also covered energy security and economic cooperation in the Mediterranean, but focused "above all" on political instability in Libya and the efforts to stop "irregular immigration" from that country.

The funeral was attended by friends and family alongside local journalists and prominent opposition figures.

🇰🇪 Kenyan opposition leader says current government is illegitimate

Kenya's opposition leader Raila Odinga has called on his supporters to resist the government of President William Ruto, saying its disputed election last August had robbed it of legitimacy.

Ruto's Kenya Kwanza coalition eked out a narrow victory over Odinga in the election, whose result announcement was accompanied by chaotic scenes at the national tallying centre, and his victory was upheld by the Supreme Court.

Both leaders, who have dominated politics in East Africa's biggest economy for decades, settled into an uneasy calm after the electoral contest, but Odinga's coalition said last week it had found new evidence of rigging.
